New Media Blog In Portland

September 16, 2009 · Posted in The View From Here · Comments Off

When Lynn Siprelle shut down her Oregon Media Insiders site I was a little stressed.  I wasn’t sure where I would get my media fix for Portland, Oregon.  Thankfully Oregon Media Central has taken up the slack with some excellent reporting.

For those who love to stay connected with the current state of radio, television and newspapers in the Northwest I recommend (in addition to the Oregon Media Central):

Blatherwatch, which reports on the Seattle radio and TV scene.

Idaho Radio News reports on radio, TV and media in Boise, Idaho.

And for a view of the national scope RadioDailyNews is an excellent source of information.

And, finally, my current favorite is Newspaper Death Watch, which reports on the ever-changing world of daily newspapers nation wide and how they are trying to stay afloat in a highly competitive media environment.

Welcome To Friday

Another week gone.  Incredible.  As I get older I always wonder where the days go.  I’m not ready to ride off into the sunset, yet, but I do enjoy watching it from a distance…

For those who wonder, I write these columns on Friday, Sunday and Monday each week.  If something incredible crosses my desk in the mean time I will share.  Nothing incredible, yet this week, unless you count going to bed at 6PM, yesterday and waking up at 4AM.  10 hours of sleep.   That may be why I feel so lucid at the moment…

OK, for those who have been curious…

My favorite TV show:  Boston Legal.  Excellent ensemble cast and a great sense of humor – if not the bizarre.  Kinda sad that ABC decided to cancel it…

Favorite Movie(s):  Medicine Man with Sean Connery, Wag The Dog puts a great spin on things, and for a great satire on the state of television in 1976 and today, Network

Favorite Blogs and media websites:  Idaho Radio News, Blatherwatch (Seattle radio) and Radio Daily News.

ONE of my favorite newspapers:  The Minneapolis Messenger. My father grew up in Minneapolis, Kansas.  He is gone, now, but I like to keep up on what’s happening there.

Hyperlocal Blogging Expert In Tri-Cities

April 17, 2009 · Posted in NW Journal · Comments Off

By Ray Littrell

Matt McGee lives in the Tri-Cities area of Washington and writes about hyperlocal Blogging in a way that is easy to follow and understand.  His Blog, Hyperlocalblogger.com is one of the best sources of information on how to create and develop a hyperlocal project.  I especially like that he takes you through the steps he followed to create his four other projects.

His Blog also discusses how to choose a domain, how to market the Blog online and a great deal more.  This is an excellent source for anyone wanting to start a hyperlocal Blog for a hobby or as a business.

The real secret to a successful hyperlocal Blog is passion.  The stronger the interest in a community or a topic, the greater the potential of developing a strong, involved audience that comes back again and again to see what is going on.

While hyperlocal Blogging is in its infancy there are several Blogs, run as either hobbies or going commercial concerns.  One in particular is Idaho Radio News, which is run as a hobby by Don Day, who works at KTVB channel 7 in Boise.  His audience is involved in radio in particular and have strong opinions about the current state of the business.  His Blog, in fact is second only to the Idaho Statesman in unique hits per month (something over 15,000 if memory serves).

A second hyperlocal Blog I read regularly is the West Seattle Blog.  They are a true hyperlocal news source, covering the west Seattle community with daily and, when inclement weather requires it, hourly updates.  The Blog appears to be well supported by local advertisers.

One advantage to hyperlocal Blogs is their world-wide reach.  As an occasional traveler, I still want to know what’s going on back in my home town and thanks to my Blackberry, I can stay connected by just looking up my neigborhood Blog.
