This will mark the 91st  year that Boise Music Week has entertaining the people of Boise.  The festival began in 1924 when Eugene Farmer, music director at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, envisioned a free festival of music for the people of Boise.

The festival begins the last week of April and lasts until the first Saturday of May, and is staffed entirely by volunteers.

My first experience with the festival was in 1991, when I moved to Boise for the first time.  As I remember, we attended a presentation of Annie at the Velma Morrison Center For The Performing Arts.  Since then I have made it a point to attend as many of the events as I can during the music festival.

The musical for this year is Brigadoon, which will run from May 6 through May 9.

If you happen to be visiting Boise during music week I highly recommended taking in a few of the events.

Settlers Park A Family Experience

Spring is almost here.  Almost.  I think Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this past February.  That means there will be six more weeks of winter – somewhere.  Especially here in Boise.  It’s still cold and I don’t like being cold.  Somewhere else, spring has arrived.  Just not here!

What I’m really waiting for are the spring and summer events to start in the local parks.  Last year, the community of Meridian, Idaho presented Movie Night at Settlers Park.  I’m hoping they do it again this year.  Even though the era of the drive-in theater is long past there is something about being out under the stars on a warm summers night watching a movie – and if its boring, watching the stars.

On hot summer days its fun to bring the grandkids out to the park and let them romp.  They especially like the water cannons, and since I make an especially attractive target….

Settlers Park is just one of several parks in the Boise area that offer a wide variety of recreational and entertainment experiences throughout the summer.  I especially like the events that include food, like the Juneteenth Celebration, Boise Arts in the Parks and my particular favorite, the Wine Festival, which starts March 29th.

Another of my favorite events in Boise is Music Week, which begins May 1.  It is one of the oldest and longest running musical events of its kind, with all the events free to the public.  This year the week is capped of with the musical Brigadoon.

Spring is coming to Boise and with it a lot of opportunities to be out and about, exploring all that the parks have to offer.  I just wish spring were coming a bit faster.
