Sunday Pot Porridge (Porage) – whatever….

Today we are going to a birthday party for our 3 year old grandson.  Actually, he turned 3 last Sunday but the guest of honor was out of town, visiting aunts and uncles, so the birthday party is today.  It has been interesting to watch our youngest grandson grow up and develop a personality.  He has learned well from his older brother and sister and has found some very creative ways to say “No!” – as in “I don’t want to cooperate”.  I usually win in these confrontations, though.  Being a former Army sergeant I learned how to gain cooperation with equal creativity…

We are launching a shopping area called the Saturday Market in an effort to create a way to make this Blog a paying proposition. We have been spending most of the week getting the bugs out of the system.   Its going to be an interesting challenge to keep the inventory fresh…

Craig Boehman, our former Australian correspondent, is back in Oregon.  He thought he was going to stay in Australia longer, but, as is the case in life, things happened.  He will start contributing columns again soon…

I did go to see the latest Star Trek movie the day after it was released.  I was impressed.  They got it right.  I heard a rumor that there might be two more movies in the future.  Hope so…

Speaking of Star Trek.  I used to watch the original series on Channel 11 in Seattle.  Every couple of years they would get new prints, so, for about a month or so, we would see full episodes.   Eventually, though, the film sprockets would wear out and scenes would start to disappear.  Those of us who knew the episodes by heart would take bets on which scenes would disappear first…

Folklife Festival Seattle 2009

May 24, 2009 · Posted in The View From Here · Comments Off

I’m in the middle of enjoying the music and fun of the 38th Annual Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center.  No matter where I am or what I’m doing I make a point of attending and this year is no different.  I love the variety of music and talent on over 30 stages.

I didn’t take this YouTube video, but it does give you an idea of some of the charm of the Folklife event.  Come by and enjoy!

The Gamekeeper Is Closing

May 22, 2009 · Posted in Potpourri · Comments Off

I remember when the Gamekeeper restaurant was THE place to go for fine dining in Boise.  When my husband and I owned one of the first kitchen shops in Boise, we would wine and dine some of our best clients there.

7-22-2007-settlers-park-027Now, because of the economics of the time, the Gamekeeper is closing on May 30, ending an era that started in 1965. When the restaurant opened it found its niche serving inventively prepared game and exotic meats, along with its Caesar salad prepared table-side.

I understand that Chef Mark Owsley will continue as the Owyhee’s executive chef, serving Gamekeeper specials at the hotel’s Plaza Grill.

While the restaurant will close, the Gamekeeper lounge will remain open and continue to serve its appetizer menu.  The lounge will also continue its Jazz on Friday and Saturday nights.

One of the great Memorial Day get away is the Sasquatch Music Festival at the Gorge Amphitheater in George, Washington. According to one journalist I follow on Twitter, this festival rates an 8 on the hippie scale.  Its a great weekend get away for the entire family.

Here’s a sample of the musical experience from last year:

Seattle Folklife Festival 2009

One of my favorite Northwest experiences is the Seattle Folklife Festival, which has been entertaining us for 38 years.  Its held the last weekend of May at the Seattle Center (May 22 to May 25 this year).  I spend most of my time at the various stages listening to the music and in between I usually end up buying stuff from the artists and vendors – filling my trunk much of the time.  Definitely a must see event when you visit Seattle.
